We pedaled through the village of Clearmont and visited the
Clearmont Jail which has been added to the National Register of HistoricPlaces.
The highlight of the day was riding the flatbed of a pickup
truck. There was an approximately 10 mile stretch of highway that was under
construction and the gravel road was not negotiable on bicycles. So, all of us
bicyclists got to put our bicycles on the flatbed of the pilot trucks. Some
hopped into the cab and some like me chose to sit on the toolbox on the flatbed
and take pictures and video footage.
Brian and Cassandra were the drivers of the pilot trucks
that ferried us across the construction zone. Also pictured here is Nicole
Mazza, teammate from L.A.
We saw the Eagle Butte Mines that produces coal that is used
for domestic energy generation.
The mine is located 7 miles north of Gillette. The “Welcome
to Gillette” sign as you enter identifies it as the “Energy Capital of the
Nation”.
I am not sure how "clean" the coal mining method
is and how "clean" the energy generated by coal is, but I do know
that in Lewis County, NY where I live, we have the second largest wind farm in
the state of NY. I always make it a point to take visitors for a tour of the
wind farm. I invite readers to come and visit Lewis County where "we have
it all". The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce does a fantastic job of
promoting Lewis County. If you are a business owner in Lewis County, consider
joining the C of C.
